Primary school years

Primary school classes are divided into Prep and Years 1 to 6 (total duration up to 7 years). Primary school in Victoria is a learning place for students up to 12 or 13 years old. To enter Prep, students must be 5 years of age on or before 30 April that year to be eligible (applicable to dependant fee category students only). Standard fee category students must be at least 6 years of age at the time of their visa application. Grade 6 is the final year of primary school and students are usually 12 to 13 years of age.

Study plan

Academic success is important and your child will have the best learning and teaching in the world. However, it’s not the only aim of Victorian primary schools. Our schools recognise the importance of social growth and try to keep students with others of the same age group.

Primary school students are placed in the best grade that fits their age and academic ability.

The choice of grade level will also allow for the difference between schooling systems overseas and in other states of Australia.

English language skills

Our schools support international primary students with their English language learning while they undertake normal classes with local students. Therefore, your child is not required to be enrolled in an intensive English language program before they start school.
