About Us

Growing As We Learn, Learning As We Grow

Challenge – Respect – Curiosity – Responsibility

Araluen Primary School was established in 1971. Our school is set on beautiful, spacious grounds in a quiet pocket of Sale in Gippsland, Victoria. We have extensive treed grounds, grassed ovals, delightful garden spaces, shade sails, adventure play equipment, large sporting areas and three very friendly chickens.

Our current enrolment is 92 students, divided over 5 classes. We offer a Foundation Support program for children turning 5 years old. In addition to our skilled and passionate team of teachers, we have a number of staff who support our students such as education support staff, administration staff, a Student Wellbeing Officer and an E.A.L. (English as an Additional Language) teacher.

At Araluen, we pursue personal achievement and success for all, focusing strongly on literacy, numeracy, music, S.T.E.M. and student wellbeing. Our broad curriculum includes history, geography, civics and citizenship, environmental studies, cultural studies, and more. Araluen provides specialist programs in Visual Arts, Physical Education, Music, Languages (French, Spanish and Japanese), Sustainability and S.T.E.M.

This approach not only allows our students to participate in a diverse range of learning experiences, but also helps in developing confidence, personal growth and a strong sense of self-worth. We pride ourselves on actively teaching, modelling and encouraging respect for diversity and a sense of community responsibility.

Our Specialist STEM program engages students by developing their thinking skills with hands-on activities and projects including robotics, animation, engineering and game design to connect them to each other and the global community.

As part of our emphasis on the performing arts, our students’ artistic efforts are proudly displayed at the Sale Show each year and our choir has enjoyed years of success in the vocal sections at local Eisteddfods and State School Spectacular. A large majority of our students are engaged in our AIM HIGH Instrumental Program. We host the full range of instruments for students to choose from, from violin to piano to drums to saxophone to electric guitar, and offer free small group lessons at school.

In our Foundation and Foundation Support classes, we offer the Kathy Walker Investigative Learning approach which encourages students to be critical and creative learners. They investigate, create and explore their way through our dedicated Investigations Room. Students not only understand and build on their strengths, but also challenge themselves to make new discoveries through a variety of learning experiences.

On the sporting front, in addition to weekly P.E. classes, we offer specialist tennis lessons, swimming and athletics across the whole school, as well hosting as a variety of sports clinics throughout the year.

Our senior students take on leadership roles including School Captains, House/Sport Captains, Art Captains, Music Captains, STEM Captains and Sustainability Captains. Additionally, students from Year 3 to Year 6 have the opportunity to represent the students on our Student Representative Council. All prep students are allocated a senior school buddy under our buddies program, and quickly develop a familiar and supportive “big sister/brother” relationship in the playground.

One of our greatest strengths at Araluen is our close-knit community, which is the result of our strong commitment to the school-home partnership. We have an active parent body that participates enthusiastically in the school lives of their children, and a wonderful Parents Group that organises a whole host of activities throughout the year, such as Community BBQs, Trivia Night and Fathers’ and Mothers’ Day Breakfast.

We believe strongly that the education of a child is a joint responsibility, and it is only by working together that we are able to achieve collective goals and the best outcomes for our students.
